Help Ms. McNally

Sewing is a life skill that engages students in a hands-on learning activity and incorporates critical thinking and higher order thinking skills. Our middle school 7th and 8th grade students take Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes not only for fun but to learn practical and applicable life skills. In this class students learn about personal development, relationship skills, child development, consumer skills, cooking and nutrition, leadership skills, clothing and textiles, and much, much more. Many of our district parents are employed in minimum wage jobs, often working multiple jobs to keep the family fed and clothed. According to Missouri guidelines, our rural district is considered "high poverty."

Every semester I am asked by my FACS students if we are going to do a sewing project; so far every semester I have had to say no. Currently in my classroom I have 6 pre-1980s sewing machines most of which were mishandled and are now broken. For my 20+ student classes this means, even if all 6 machines were up and running we have a very poor student to machine ratio making a machine sewn project unfeasible.

This year I have implemented a year long FACS II class in which the students continue to have a sincere desire to sew. I want to have my FACS I and FACS II students complete some basic sewing projects with the FACS II class creating a pair of pajama pants as their "final" sewing project. These projects will help them to learn the sewing process. By having this skill they can take and utilize their sewing knowledge outside the classroom and make simple repairs to worn clothes or create new clothes to wear. This will benefit all of my students, especially those with low income families. After completing these projects, the FACS II class will then work on a community service project. The students will choose a local need and create sewing projects such as: making lap quilts for a nursing home, boxer shorts for children with extended stays at hospitals, or baby clothing/accessories for low income parents.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to learn not just sewing skills that they will be able to utilize for the rest of their lives, but will also help them learn critical thinking skills. It will also help my students to become leaders in their community because my students will provide others with a service they wouldn't have been able to obtain themselves and which can not be attained without your help.
