Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

6 year olds need lots of practice with hands-on activities to develop fine motor skills. Sewing is a perfect way to help them express their creativity and motivate them to develop great hand control. My class has become enchanted with sewing but the cost of the supplies is limiting our projects.

I teach first grade at a Spanish - English Two Way Immersion school.

We are community centered and strive to provide a bilingual and exciting education. In our first grade, native English speakers are learning in Spanish along with native Spanish speakers. We also teach English to all students at a specified time during the day. All students are learning a second language as well as academic content. One way we develop second languages is through engaging hands-on activities. Students learn vocabulary and phrasing in context. By bringing in unique opportunities such as sewing, students gain language skills and motor skills. When they enter first grade, most are still working on pencil control or using scissors. After a year of developing fine motor skills, students have great control and execution.

My Project

Offering the opportunity to learn how to sew at school makes fine-motor skill practice seem like play! The students are so engaged and focused you can literally hear a pin drop! They learn patience when working on a project because it takes several sewing sessions to complete. They understand that the results are not immediate or perfect and that the "mistakes" are what make their projects unique. I've seen students with fine-motor skill difficulties get frustrated when writing or cutting with scissors. Somehow, the relaxing art of sewing does not frustrate them....it inspires them. The materials in my proposal will keep my classes sewing for years to come. We've incorporated sewing into science, language arts, personal care (mending our clothes!) and we've made gifts for family members. With each project, students' hand control and focus to detail improves. It is truly rewarding to teach a 6 year old how to sew and to see him/her blossom.

We cannot assume that all students have access to adults who will teach them to sew at home.

By teaching a child to sew at school, we offer a life-long skill that is inexpensive and creative. We also provide an exciting and motivating way to develop fine-motor skills. They leave first grade with a portfolio of sewing projects they created and will share with family and friends. They leave with better hand control and with the patience to work on a project for multiple sessions. How exciting!
