Sewing: A Forever Skill

My students need sewing items and tools to create costumes for our plays. In addition, we will make crafts to sell at our craft fairs in order to raise money to purchase items.

My Students

My students have autism, learning and language disabilities, and emotional disabilities. Each year, we put on a show. The students work hard at learning their lines and songs, and dance movements. They also make their own costumes, in collaboration with each other and staff. This year, we are presenting Disney Junior's Lion King. I am the speech Teacher in the program and we all collaborate to make this show exceptional. My students and staff need a sewing machine and sewing materials for costumes. These materials will last forever in assuring that the show can go on for years and years to come. The show is always presented in June, and this year, I have observed the struggle with an old broken sewing machine, and this donation would truly be a game changer for our students and staff.

My Project

My students who have autism and emotional and learning disabilities will learn to sew in order to develop skills for life. In addition, they will be able to create costumes for our annual play. We will also make and sell crafts at our school's craft sale in order to earn money to purchase rewards, materials, and funding for various activities and trips. Sewing is a skill the students will have forever in order to learn a constructive hobby and to be able to use this skill in the future in order to be able to create their own source of income through their creative work.
