Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are incredibly fast learners and have done a great job learning how to hand sew. We are nearing the point where they are ready to engage in more advanced projects on the sewing machine. As a new growing program, we still need more machines to accommodate all the students. We only have 4 machines and 30 students in the class. Students are often waiting a whole class period to use a machine, and when it's finally their turn it's time to clean up. A new sewing machine will allow more students to work simultaneously. Our costuming class has grown to be a huge success because it is completely student-centered with hands-on learning and each unit culminating in project-based learning assessments.

My students love learning how to sew and often bring in their own clothing that needs to be repaired; they state how much they love learning these necessary life skills.

I am excited for them to learn new sewing skills on the sewing machine. As I always say, "Everyone should know how to sew on a button."
