Sew We Go Camping, Baltimore City Students Fundraise For Camping

Help me give my students camping essentials which many do not have access to, like tents and camp stoves. They also need sewing machines and supplies for school performance costumes, and their textile arts fundraising projects.

My Students

Our students come from twenty-six zip codes around Baltimore City. They are as diverse as our city is, making a community that is 66% African American, 27% White, 3% Hispanic/Latinx, 4% Asian or more than one race; approximately 45% come from families considered low-income.

There is no better way to bridge our divides than to have our diverse student community work together on common goals.

Our inner city elementary and middle school students need help funding their textile arts program, micro-economy, and camping adventure, all of which are interrelated and are a valuable part of their curriculum. Our textile arts program is used for fundraising and costume design for school performances. Student fundraising builds on current student led efforts that finance important community building trips. To be successful fundraisers, creators, and campers, my students must learn to consider each others' valuable perspectives which are drawn from their own experiences.

My students are enthusiastic, creative, and motivated. They will do amazing things if given the resources, but being from an inner city public school, resources are scant. They would be overjoyed for any help they get to run their business, textile arts program, and obtain essential camping gear.

My Project

Our events have and will range from well attended Spring Festivals, sewn crafts sales, made from scratch bake sales, and pop-up coffee shops. Students work together to fundraise with the ultimate goal of an overnight camping trip at a local state park.

We wish to create programs that will teach students to collaborate ideas and implement plans for textile creations and fundraising with a goal of financing their end of year community trip which many of our families could not afford otherwise.

Our textile arts room needs a few more sewing machines and supplies to accommodate student interest. Currently they wait to use the two machines we have. With more machines, they can produce more product for their sales, and in turn, make more funds for their camping trip. This year they have already made masks and scrunchies for their fundraisers, created dance outfits from African Kente and Ankara fabrics for their upcoming Black History Month performance, and have begun designing costumes for their Lion King performance.

We feel getting our inner city students into the thick of nature is an important experience. Many of our students have never been camping and do not have access to equipment and supplies. While student fundraising pays for campsites, travel, and groceries, it does not leave enough for camp essentials like tents, stoves, sleeping bags, tarps, and the crucial French press to keep chaperones happy in the morning! These essentials can be reused for many years.
