My students need a NEW computerized sewing machine to see that sewing can be hi-tech and that our old sewing machines aren't the only way to sew!

My Students
Did you ever want to learn to sew? You would not believe how advanced sewing machines are today. Students can do amazing things with the right equipment. I would like for my students to see what they can create with a computerized sewing machine!
My students live in a small rural community.
Many of them come from low economic backgrounds. Sewing is a skill that has been downplayed in recent years, but with today's available technology, sewing has gone hi-tech. My students will be so excited to see how easy it is to sew with the right equipment, and they will be amazed at what they are able to do, as far as personalizing and decorating their projects. The one computerized sewing machine we have in our department is over 12 years old and so are most of our basic sewing machines. I would love for my students to see how advanced sewing machines have become. I think it will encourage them to continue this "lost art."
My Project
The "Home Ec" department has a stereotypical sound--it makes one think of girls cooking and sewing. Today's "Family & Consumer Sciences" programs are so much more than that! Both boys and girls in these programs are learning important life skills--ranging from nutrition to financial planning to time management. Learning to sew is not a high priority in many of our programs, but nevertheless, it is a life skill that many students can benefit from. Students need to know how to sew on a button or repair a seam--instead of hiring someone to do this for them (or throwing the article of clothing away!), they do it themselves and can even earn extra money doing this for others. Sewing can become a creative outlet for our students that they might never discover on their own. A student who is artistic can benefit from learning these skills. A student who has good math skills will be amazed at how these skills are used in sewing. This is a skill that will not be taught anywhere else!
Donations to this request will benefit all students who take a course at our school that involves sewing.
Who knows--one of these students could become the next Ralph Lauren or Liz Claiborne!
More than half of students from low‑income households
