Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The MLK Campus Library serves 5 different high schools, all with varying levels of need and engagement. One thing that all of the students seem to have in common is their need to destress and manage their anxiety during their free periods. I have always found that students relax and talk about things that are bothering them when they have something to do that keeps their hands busy. The Campus Library is the perfect place for this to happen. We've had lots of success with puzzles, crocheting, coloring and making bracelets.

This year, students specifically asked me for sewing supplies.

I would love to help students explore this interest by providing different kinds of sewing materials, including embroidery sets, hand sewing materials and sewing machines. Something I especially love about sewing is that, in addition to helping students destress, it also is teaching them a life skill and helping them practice focusing on a task and following directions. Many students are complaining to me about their lack of attention span and how they struggle to stay on task. Letting them work on a fun project that requires the use of those important skills will help them in their academics as well as supporting their social emotional needs.
