My Students

We all have those days. The days that feel like nothing is going “right.” Earlier this year, I had a particularly challenging day. I was upset and trying to hide how defeated I was feeling from my 17 second graders. One student, however, noticed how I was feeling. “Ms. Webster,” he whispered, “when you’re sad, it makes me feel sad too.” I looked at him, touched by his empathy. He continued, “I think it’s because I feel like you are part of my family.”

Despite growing up in one of the most violent cities in the country, these students have big hearts.

What I want most for them is to provide them with a vibrant classroom community where they feel both safe and loved.

My Project

On Dr. Seuss' birthday, I asked my students to share with the class their favorite Dr. Seuss book. I had them turn and talk for a moment to share with the friends in their area, then brought them back together for a full class discussion. "Who would like to share with us their favorite Dr. Seuss book?" I asked. Only 2 students raised their hands. They named "The Cat in the Hat," and "Oh, The Places You'll Go." I asked if anyone else would like to share - crickets. I asked them, "Even if it isn't your favorite, tell me what Dr. Seuss books you have read before." Again, silence.

The students in my class have grown up in an environment where classic children's books are often inaccessible.

The stories that shaped so much of my own childhood are completely foreign to them.

Dr. Seuss books are not only wildly entertaining, but they help develop strong readers in so many ways. They contain rhyming patterns, sight words, nonsense words, build an appreciation for poetry, and strengthen fluency. Above all else, Dr. Seuss books encourage a love of reading. This foundation is imperative to molding our students into lifelong learners.
