I am a first year NYC Teaching Fellow, and I teach 2nd grade in a portable classroom at PS 202 in East NY. All 17 of my students receive free school lunch. Our classroom is in desperate need of new books for our library. I received a very limited library from the school,(most likely because my classroom is in a portable, and distributed materials hardly make their way out to the yard). I have added to it with my own money, but it's simply gotten to be too expensive for me. I've noticed that my students often argue over who is going to read our one Dr. Seuss book, Fox In Socks, during independent reading. The children enjoy the rhyming words, colorful pictures, and overall familiarity of Dr. Seuss. I don't have a lot of books for the children to choose from during independent reading, and I fear that independent reading is simply getting too repetitive and boring for them. In an effort to boost the overall interest and love of reading in my classroom,I am asking for a donation. I want the children to be excited about reading again, and in order to do that, I've got to provide them with more of what they are interested in. Dr. Seuss books are big hits with all of my kids. I'd love for them to be excited about more than one book in our classroom library, and to want to borrow books to read at home. I've priced books on barnesandnoble.com that I think my students will absolutely love : Thank you very much for helping me open up the world of reading for 17 truly wonderful children.
