Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My children are a classic representation of our diverse Brooklyn New York! We come from varied backgrounds; economic, academic and social alike. Our diversity will contribute to the richness of our classroom life but will also mean the we might be challenged when it comes to equity and ability for families to provide supplies and or experiences. My students stepping through the doors this year with the support of DonorsChoose.org helps to level the uneven playing field! Thank You

My Project

While sailing my students will have a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that promote collaborative team building behaviors. Students will apply, in classroom learning while circulating on deck to various work stations. The stations are thematic and are chosen prior to the trip. Students will experience sail hoisting, navigation, dragging the bottom of the river to net living organisms to investigate, just to name a few.

How cool and awesome will it be for children to imagine themselves as explorers sailing up the Hudson.

They will be observing geographic features of NYC with the lens of an explorer thinking: What will be the benefits to colonizing territories along this great expansive river? The questions that my students will come up with during and after the sail will almost be as great as the experience itself...almost.

This one trip targets so many of our CCSS science and social studies alike! As scientists we look at various river populations and at how those populations have changed over the years due to environmental and human factors. We can also have a first hand look at physical and chemical weathering that is occurring or has occurred on the vessel itself. As social scientists we will explore the attributes of the river which made its locale popular with colonists.

So many wonderful projects can come out of an experience such as this. Students can write songs about their adventure. They can create art to capture their journey and let's not forget about the rich personal narratives and non-fiction writing that will come out of this adventure. Writers will be expected to write letters, persuasive letters to the principal highlighting why this should be a fourth grade trip every year! Make this dream experience a reality!
