About My Students

I teach at a public charter school in Crown Heights that serves 400 phenomenal Black and/or Latino students, 75% of whom qualify for Free or Reduced-Price Lunch.

Angel and Sasha are both rising seniors on the team who have committed themselves not only to Student Congress and LD Debate respectively but also to stepping up as Fundraising Coordinators. Their hard work means that our team will be able to continue providing opportunities to all of our students, regardless of a family's ability to pay.

We need these specific school supplies to prepare for the 2018-2019 local and national tournaments that our scholars will be participating in, which include competing with like and brilliant minded students across our city, state, and country. Speech and Debate as a whole allows for the opportunity for students of all backgrounds to push their thinking with deeper and more intellectual analysis of topics and find solutions for everyday issues. It also pushes their activeness and awareness in modern day society and politics that non-participating students are not as involved with. Allowing our children of tomorrow to have the necessary tools to build the foundation of their ideas for their speeches and performances will help them not only do well in these tournaments but also train the future lawyers, congressmen and women, public speakers and more great speakers.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to make sure every student has the tools that would allow them to thrive in Speech and Debate. We need these specific supplies to help students write, record and safely store their speeches and important documents for the corresponding tournaments that they will have in the near future. The only thing between our scholars and the other competitors is the individual speeches and ideas they would share. Furthermore, our debaters will need these materials in order to perform their speeches and hold on to their ideas not only in mind but also in hand.

Our Speech and Debate team will ensure that once we gain all of the necessary material we need to be productive and do exceptionally well at the tournaments we will be visiting, that we will waste no time using the skills we already possess with the donations given to us. As seniors of the Speech and Debate team, “teamwork makes the dream work” is our motto that we choose to live by. With the donations given, and our new access to the materials that we need for the next season of Speech and Debate at our school we will be able to get the most out of our work because of the preparedness we will now have for our team.

As the only public school in our league, we have more pressure on us than our more privileged counterparts in Speech and Debate. Having known this, our scholars work hard with all tools provided to fight against not only stereotypes but will push towards stronger habits that aid us against our adversaries in our district and in the country. The other students from the other schools we compete against are private schools and have the advantage of way more resources available to them with little worry for expenses for those materials. We don't want cost to limit any student from participating in a single speech and debate tournament, nor to limit them from working at their fullest potential, which is why we believe with your help to fund our mission our scholars will be very successful.
