Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The joy of new learning happens every day in PreK! Preschoolers discover new colors that are mixed at the easel, they see the veins of a leaf or the hairs on a root when looking through a magnifying glass, and they usually find out that the teacher doesn’t live in school with the the rest of the staff! Our PreK classes are housed in a public school in Canarsie, Brooklyn, where we provide classroom settings full of opportunities to experience learning through a hands on approach. Attitudes about school are shaped by these early experiences and habits are instilled to promote independence and the desire to learn. For many of our students, this will be their very first school experience! After months in quarantine, they will enter with anticipation and they will be met with an early childhood environment that fosters the joy of learning.

My Project

Providing our early childhood students with these materials will help them practice and learn organizational skills to set them up for successful school careers as independent learners! We cannot share supplies this year and will need to store individual supplies safely and separately. We want our prekindergarten students to enjoy their time in the classroom despite the pandemic. Some of our students may be struggling financially and we want to respect their families efforts by caring for school supplies so they last. To achieve this goal we will have to reimagine our classroom space to create a safe and exciting learning environment for our students that will be entering school for the first time. Having the items on our wish list will help us create the WOW factor for our kids as they enter school for the first time. We can designate spaces that are personalized to let each kid know that they belong. Individual materials could be stored safely so 4-year olds will be able to follow more stringent regulations due to COVID19. We could set up successful routines that teach organization and respect of others during the hybrid model that our students will experience this year. If we have the right materials we will be ready to learn and can experience the daily joy of new learning in our PreK, where students are attending school for the first time!
