Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing, there will be no result."--Mahatma Gandhi At Brooklyn International High School, our students learn how to take action on social issues that matter to them, like immigration, income inequality, and racial injustice.

Students at BIHS come from over 30 countries from around the world.

Students from China learn alongside students from Tibet, Guinea, Colombia, Bangladesh, and Paraguay, each helping the other to expand their English along with their critique thinking skills. Our school has a strong service learning emphasis: students learn about big problems in the world, devise their own solutions, and then take action together to improve conditions for us all.

My Project

Students will use these markers, canvases, tote bags and a paper punch to take part in service learning projects in which they will raise awareness about social issues. Our students go out into the "real world" to raise awareness, teaching students about immigration in other schools, helping to get out the vote during election season, fundraising for victims of natural disasters, and many other social justice projects. Plain tote bags and canvasses, fabric markers, and button-making supplies help our students spread their messages and appeal to a wide audience.

By donating to this project, you will give my students essential materials for service learning.

Every time we do a service learning project (which is often!), students ask for plain tote bags and canvases and fabric markers to help spread their social justice messages to a larger audience. By giving students the choice and opportunity to take action on issues that matter to them, we are helping them become more involved in civic life, and we're teaching them that their opinions matter.
