My students need a collection of Social Studies books, including a We the People U.S. History Series, a The American Colonies Paperback Series and 17 additional single titles.
My students are passionate about learning about historical time periods. They are in 4th grade in the Chinatown neighborhood of NY. My students don't often leave their neighborhood due to low incomes with in their families and working parents with multiple jobs. That's why is my job to open their eyes and minds to a world outside of NY in both the present and past.
NYS 4th grade curriculum is divided into four parts. They are U.S. government, the Iroquois nation, Colonial America and Immigration. My class never really had many materials on Colonial America or other interesting time periods like the Gold Rush.
We need books on individual colonies, large colonial maps, and books on larger events like the American Revolution. In my list of requested materials, they are all generally books. This is so because when we are studying a time period we get most of our information from trade books, as our school does not have text books. All of the materials I have requested have equal importance. The first step in this study is to learn about the first settlements and then how those settlements turned into larger colonies. Daily life and slavery in colonies will also be studied, as well as, the events that led to the Revolutionary War.
Your help will ensure my students have the appropriate materials to learn about these important time periods in history.
