My Students

Imagine trying to learn about Native Americans without having ever met one. Talking about settling in one of the 13 colonies without having every seen the ocean or a farm. My students are lucky that our school devotes a solid amount of time to Social Studies but need more exposure to relevant info.

Many of the students in my class have never been outside of Tennessee -- some have never been outside of Nashville.

As a first-year teacher, I strove to develop my classroom library as many of them do not have access to leveled books that interest them. Looking over the books I collected, I realized I had very few informational texts. As much as I love engaging in conversation about history with them, there's nothing like having them engage with the materials at their own pace in their own time.

My Project

One of the things I love about my school is that we're working on having our assessments be based on hands-on learning experiences and projects. Students will try to capture what it would have been like to live during these periods through various representations. These books are directly related to our Social Studies curriculum. Many of them focus on painting a picture of a daily experience through the life of different people. These books will take the students from the Native peoples of the United States to the explorers they met to the country that they created in the same space.

Our school is piloting this hands-on curriculum as we become a magnet school to try and diversify the students population.

By creating a richer academic experience this year, we will help to spread the word that despite negative stereotypes of the student population, we are smart and dedicated scholars!
