Building a love of reading is the most important part of teaching first grade! I am currently a first grade teacher at a brand new progressive charter school that just opened it's doors to 150 Kindergarten and First graders. We will eventually serve students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. We are one of only 6 charter schools in our district and have a unique mission to teaching science and green living.

Our classroom is in the process of building a strong classroom library with books on many different levels about many different topics. However, there is little room in our small charter school budget for extra supplies like series books. I believe that series books are the best way to hook children into reading. They learn to grow as readers by falling in love with the characters in series books, noticing the patterns that are the same or different in each series, and by reading books with chapters that are on their own independent level. This is especially important for reaching high level readers that are ready to dive into comprehension strategies.

You can help our classroom library grow by donating the books I have requested! These series books include classics such as Mr. Putter and Tabby, Henry and Mudge, Nate the Great, Poppleton, Junie B. Jones, and Young Cam Jansen. I know that once we have these books in our library, they will be instant hits!

With your help, my first graders will be able to reach their highest potential as readers.
