My Students

I teach at an elementary school in a rural district. The community my school serves has a high rate of generational poverty. Because of this, a majority of the students we serve have experienced trauma and come to us with tremendous needs in all areas of life. Providing them with a sense of safety, consistency, a great deal of understanding and compassion, as well as rich learning experiences is absolutely necessary for their success.

As a school counselor, I work directly with students who present with unique behavioral, emotional, and learning needs, many as a result of trauma and adverse childhood experiences.

My students are in need of a safe, calming space when they become dis-regulated, stressed, or experience a trauma response. A safe, quiet space will allow my students an opportunity to regain control and composure, will lessen the incidence of meltdowns which will help to safeguard their dignity and allow them to return to the classroom ready and eager to learn.

My students are incredibly grateful and eager to learn. They love new experiences and thrive in an academically rich, trauma informed learning environment.

My Project

Every student in my school will benefit from a sensory room. Students are facing a great amount of stress and unknown this year. They have lived through something that none of us have had to experience in our lifetimes. Because of this, they are coming to use with additional anxiety, fear, and the effects of trauma.

Through a variety of lessons students will be taught to recognize physiological signs of stress, as well self-regulation techniques and coping strategies.

Students will begin to recognize when they are in need of a break in order to regain control and a sense of emotional safety. Students who are in need of a break will be allowed to access the sensory room and choose an activity which will allow them to regain homeostasis and control of their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behavior. This will allow students to proactively address moments of stress in a productive way, rather than in maladaptive or reactive ways, which could have a lasting negative impact.

By giving my students a sensory room, I am giving them a safe place to just be. A place to find peace and serenity. A place to recalibrate and refocus in order to be ready and willing to learn.
