This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In early childhood classrooms, the meeting area should be the heart of the classroom. Unfortunately, our classroom carpet is stained and uninviting. "I don't want to sit on the carpet," "Está sucia," and "I can't sit there." are commonly heard refrains. A new carpet will calm our eyes and anxieties, while helping us grow our classroom community.

A new carpet, alongside other organizational materials, will add structure to our classroom that will foster students' independence in the space.

In our second grade dual language class, all ELL students are learning a new language. Our beautiful, diverse class includes native English speakers, heritage Spanish speakers who are developing proficiency in both languages, as well as migrant students who have recently arrived to the country. At every moment during the day, there are students working hard to understand a new language. The materials I have requested in this project will allow students to feel safe and comfortable in our space, knowing what to do even when they are challenged by language.
