This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in grades 6th through 12th, in an inner city school and have also been diagnosed with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. Our school is a "Title I School", where everyone is eligible for free lunch. This financial need is also in their homes, where the most basic of tools for their education is not available to them. However, this does not stop them from from being assiduous and motivated students, driven to excel in school.

As we prepare to return to school, my students will return happy and ready to resume our with our new normal.

Regardless of what limitations they may face, nothing stops my brave students from trying to do their best. They truly are my heroes.

My Project

This past year has been very challenging for my students who are in Life-Skills and Autistic Support classrooms. My students will require a lot of support when they return to school, as many have not been in a building in over a year. Along with all of the new excitement of returning, there will be some challenging behaviors to come as well. Self-regulation is a skill some students possess, while others do not, regardless of their background. My students need a safe space to reduce or avoid challenging behaviors. A sensory room will allow for my students to be able to learn how to self-regulate any anxiety or other emotions and be able to focus on learning in the classroom.

A fully equipped sensory room will provide my students with an individualized, dynamic environment for sensory integration.

This project will allow for a variety of options for my students. As a 6th - 12th grade school, the interest per child will vary. These items will be the most important pieces that will allow for my students to have a special safe place. The goal is to provide my students with the tools they need to be able to self-regulate their emotions and be able to spend more time working on their academic work. I have seen sensory rooms in school outside of my district and seen how powerful they truly are with students that have complex needs. Please help my students receive the same support as those outside of our district!
