My Project

As educators dedicated to supporting students with disabilities, we know the importance of providing a sensory-friendly and engaging learning environment in fostering growth and independence for our students. We are Ms. Wei, a speech-language pathologist, Mr. Sam, an occupational therapist, and Ms. Yvane, a physical therapist serving students with autism ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade at a public school in a low-income high-need portion of Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, NY. Our students come from some of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the city.

Not only do our students have to navigate through the chaotic times in our world today, but also have to quickly adapt to unpredictable changes, which is not easy for our students who have sensory processing difficulties in addition to difficulties communicating their needs and wants.

We want to help transition students to the least restrictive environment and help develop their skills to generalize outside of related services.

We are asking for sensory toys that can help our students regulate their sensory input and manage overstimulation. Our students need these tools to self-regulate and calm down as they provide comfort and relaxation. In addition, we are asking for classroom supplies and disinfecting /cleaning supplies which are needed to keep our students and staff healthy and safe from everyday germs that may appear in the school building.
