I am a passionate National Board Certified special education high school teacher.
Our school is a Title I school serving a diverse population. The students I work with are determined and strive to persevere through social, emotional, and academic challenges. My Community-Based Instruction (CBI) class has worked on the yearbook staff, attended school activities, volunteered in the community, and served on the (ASB) Associated Student Body. They excel with movement and hands-on experiences. I am blessed to be their teacher and strive to encourage students beyond their greatest expectations.
It's time to touch, move, hear and experience the world around us. During structured break time students will have the ability to play wall tic-tac-toe and wall Scrabble. This will reinforce the beauty of sportsmanship and turn taking. The desk lamps (and batteries) will soften the mood and aura in the room, helping students relax and focus. The hands-on sensory fidgets facilitate focus and concentration. The moveable sand wall art is a hands-on experience helping students take a quick break from their learning and breathe.
Additionally, some of the students in my classroom are diagnosed with cerebral palsy and need adaptive equipment to fully participate. These adaptive scissors will provide a more inclusive environment. Lastly, the stackable boxes bring whimsical color and organization to the forefront. As we bring this project to a close, we see that these materials will teach students through hands-on activities, project-based interactive learning, real-world applications, and help students understand experiential learning in the classroom.
