My Project

Children with special needs work just like adults do. If there is a high incentive or reward at the end of a goal, we are more inclined to finish our work in order to get the reward or even just a break. Being on the spectrum, it can be difficult to know what children may want and it can be hard to complete tasks for a long period of time. However, having positive reinforcers that they enjoy can help motivate them to finish their work or it can help decrease and behaviors that may arise if they know they'll receive a break with a favorable toy.

My students on the autism spectrum are noticeably more engaged and motivated to finish their work if they have the choice of a highly motivating toy or activity.

The products I have selected can be used to individualize my students choices in a break or high reinforcer. If my students know they may be able to get their favorite toy or take a 3 minute break in our sensory area, they are more likely to finish their work in order to get it. "First we do work, then we can play with bubbles" or "First I finish my work, then I get to play with the marble track". It is just like how adults will work more when they know there is a vacation they have been planning or a when a bonus is in their horizon upon reaching a quota. Having that little time of fun and relaxation makes completing work more motivating.
