My Students

My students come from a Pre-K and 3-K center where more than 80% are special education students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and an Intellectual Disability. Most of these students are non-verbal and have trouble expressing their basic needs. We also have a high percentage of students from low-income families, with fewer opportunities to access therapies, community activities, and sensory equipment. As their educators, it is our job to expose them to the sensory world and hand them the tools they need to process and understand their sensory needs successfully.

Most of our students have intense sensory processing differences that make learning very difficult for them.

When children have intense sensory needs, it can be challenging to function appropriately in a classroom setting. They can cause harm to themselves and others. This sensory gym will provide them with the tools they need to regulate their bodies and become successful throughout their lives. In early childhood, students learn through play. This sensory-based gym will not only be the most fun part of their day but the most crucial part of their life.

My Project

These materials will help my students regulate their emotions. Sensory tools help my special needs students calm down their bodies to attend and engage in activities within the classroom. Children with Autism have a difficult time self-regulating ad are often sensory seekers. These materials will aid them in getting the input needed to control their bodies.

Squishy toys help the students calm down during transitions and help them regulate their emotions.

The use of weighted items also aid students in relaxing during rest time and throughout the day if needed. These materials will be used as a social emotional tool throughout the day in our classroom.
