My Students

Each student is unique and special. The students in my resource classroom bring much joy to our building everyday! I presently teach four 4th-6th grade students with moderate and severe disabilities. I have students with autism who tend to be more withdrawn, often preferring to work and play by themselves. I have students with functional mental disabilities who express some interest in their similar-age, typically developing peers but are uncomfortable trying to interact with them due to social communication deficits. Each of these students have 2-3 peer helpers who assist them in their general education classes. The helpers also join in social group activities in our resource room at least once weekly.

My students work hard to learn the skills that will help them be successful throughout the rest of their school years and adulthood.

Our peer helpers model age-appropriate social skills for my students while strengthening their own citizenship and leadership abilities.

My Project

Education is more than learning how to read, write, and functionally use numbers. In moderate-severe resource classrooms, we work significantly with helping students to build and strengthen their functional life skills. An area that we continually target is social communications. This project, along with the peer helper program that we have begun implementing, will provide the students with the tools and calming atmosphere to help them strengthen their socialization skills.

The resources that I am requesting will allow my students to lessen their anxieties and decompress while communicating and interacting in activities with their teachers, therapists, and peer helpers.

When the students walk into the sensory room, they will be welcomed with the waterfall effect fiber optic curtain, the bubble tube floor lamp, and the ocean wave night light ceiling projector. They will be able to turn these on or off to meet their sensory needs. The students will have access to a basket with the counter clickers, spinners, fidget toys, and fidget cube as needed throughout each day to help decrease frustrations and increase attention. These tools may, also, be used for more direct instructional purposes, such as having the students describe the objects and allowing play use of the objects in structured social skill activities. The teachers and therapists will teach the students to use the Alexa skills on the Echo Dot to help further enhance the students' communication and technological abilities with real-world application.
