Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students in our classroom are in grades 3-5 and all are on the autism spectrum. The sensory tools that I have chosen will help my students succeed in the classroom setting both quietly during lessons, as well as when they are interacting with their peers. Many of the students in my classroom seek out sensory input as a way to calm themselves down. The tools that I have outlined in this project will allow them to stay calm and focused on their lessons and activities. Sensory tools are also utilized as a way to deescalate students who are already upset. Items like the light projector and sensory tubes will be placed in our "calm down room" so that students will have a welcoming environment to collect themselves and get ready to learn.

With these new sensory tools, my students will be able to be more attentive during lessons, as well as have fun new ways to interact with their peers.

The water table, kinetic sand, and Play-Doh will be used as we help our students engage in appropriate peer interactions such as turn taking, sharing, and cooperative play.

I have seen how sensory tools can have a positive impact on student learning and behavior. Additional options for sensory input activities will continue to allow students to have a positive way to engage in sensory seeking activities in school.
