My Project
My students are creative, playful, and inventive spirits. However, there are many of them who struggle with feeling calm and focused. Some of these students are on the autism spectrum. Some have sensory processing disorder, meaning that their senses are either over-sensitive or under-sensitive, affecting their emotions and behavior, as well as their academics.
I have noticed that many behavior issues are actually sensory issues.
Students who are unfocused, can't stop talking or making sounds, or wander the room frequently have unmet sensory needs. When I have used sensory supports in the past, many behavior issues went away. Unfortunately, there is not enough to go around, so I am going to try to expand my collection of sensory tools in order to help as many students as possible.
The water timers help students with sensory issues, especially those on the autism spectrum, feel more focused and present. They are also a great tool for helping students learn to regulate their emotions. Play-doh is always a crowd-pleaser but I especially like to use it to help special needs students work with extra energy out and it also helps develop their fine motor skills.
