This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an Occupational Therapist, I services approximately 35 students per year with a wide range of special needs and diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, Developmental Motor Coordination, and general developmental delays. Almost all of my students have some level of sensory processing and/or modulating difficulties, which affect their ability to engage in age appropriate self-care, play, socialization, and academic activities. Research suggests that it is not uncommon for students with difficulty in academic learning (reading, math, language development), have underlying sensory processing deficits such as auditory processing difficulties, immature vestibular systems often associated with primitive reflex retention (related to learning difficulties), visual processing difficulties, and other variations.

My Project

Providing appropriate sensory input throughout the day to students with sensory processing difficulties is key to maintaining optimal arousal level. Organized and planned sensory input is key!

Appropriate sensory input is said to increase attention, improve behavior, and facilitate learning.

Vestibular input through the use of swings provides a calming or alerting sensation, depending on individualized needs of each student.

Different swings provide different movement and input. The bubble swing can provide rotary movement for children who constantly seek movement activities, while the platform swing can provide both vestibular (movement) and deep pressure (while students lay on their stomachs) to improve body awareness.
