it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are creative, playful, and inventive spirits. However, there are many of them who struggle with feeling calm and focused. Some of these students are on the autism spectrum. Some have sensory processing disorder, meaning that their senses are either over-sensitive or under-sensitive, affecting their emotions and behavior, as well as their academics.
I have noticed that many behavior issues are actually sensory issues.
Students who are unfocused, can't stop talking or making sounds, or wander the room frequently have unmet sensory needs. When I have used sensory supports in the past, many behavior issues went away. Unfortunately, there is not enough to go around, so I am going to try to expand my collection of sensory tools in order to help as many students as possible.
The blackjack chairs will help support students seeking proprioceptive input who struggle to stay still when sitting in the meeting area. The water timers help students with sensory issues, especially those on the autism spectrum, feel more focused and present. They are also a great tool for helping students learn to regulate their emotions. The noise-canceling headphones help students who feel very easily overstimulated by sound.
