My Project
My students are creative, playful, and inventive spirits. However, there are many of them who struggle with feeling calm and focused. Some of these students are on the autism spectrum. Some have sensory processing disorder, meaning that their senses are either over-sensitive or under-sensitive, affecting their emotions and behavior, as well as their academics.
I have noticed that many behavior issues are actually sensory issues.
Students who are unfocused, can't stop talking or making sounds, or wander the room frequently have unmet sensory needs. When I have used sensory supports in the past, many behavior issues went away. Unfortunately, there is not enough to go around, so I am going to try to expand my collection of sensory tools with chair bands and fidget toys in order to help as many students as possible.
The kick bands are great for students who are seeking sensory input, as well as for students who have ADHD, anxiety, or just don't have a yard where they can run around and get the exercise they need. The Wacky Tracks fidget toys are great for students with "busy fingers" who also typically have unmet sensory needs or suffer from anxiety. I've seen both of these sensory supports help students focus, as well as giving them a much needed break from the stress they experience during the school day.
