This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the academic, social, emotional, and other challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
I continually adapt the regular education curriculum to fit the needs of the Autism students in my classroom.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives or disability, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Sensory supports allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a
sensory items such as a fidget, small toy, or other object to help maintain attention, decrease stress, and can be a calming influence in the classroom.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given an opportunity to use a sensory object in the classroom.
Sensory rooms help teach children with autism and other behavioral health challenges to regulate their bodies in a way that allows them to achieve success in the classroom. By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus.
