My Students

I teach Pre-K special ed. I’m loving being their teacher! They all make me laugh, give great hugs, amaze me with how they learn, and every morning I can’t wait to see their sweet little faces! My kiddos have Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, and Developmental Delay and are 3 and 4 years old. They are learning about shapes, colors, letters, and numbers. The most important learning that takes place in my class is social and emotional skills. Right now they are learning who is in the classroom, the names of everyone, how to share toys, not hitting or biting, having a safe and calm body, etc. These are the most challenging skills to learn

Most of my little ones also have sensory processing disorder.

Their bodies struggle to process the sensory going in (sounds, lights, taste, etc.) and out. This makes their behavior challenging. They require an atmosphere that is calming and toys that can help them regulate their bodies so they can learn. My biggest goal for them is to get them to where they will be able to be in classrooms with their typical peers by the time they start kindergarten.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help my students regulate their sensory system so they can learn how to function in the classroom! The vibrating cushions help calm their bodies so they are able to sit for longer periods of time. The weighted vest and weighted blanket help relieve the overstimulated environment in which they learn. The light filters help the strong light in the classroom that overstimulates the students. All of the items support my students learning environment and their sensory needs.

Sitting, for example, is a skill all students need to be able to do in school.

But for my students, sitting is uncomfortable. They can’t sit still. Sitting on a vibrating cushion adds sensory input that regulates their bodies, therefor increasing their ability to sit longer in order to learn.
