My Students

Some students can learn by listening, others by reading a book and some can succeed from copying off of the board. My six students with autism require a multi-sensory approach to learning.

Children with autism require repetition and motivation when they are learning.

My students need to be taught all concepts multiple times and in various ways in order for them to be successful. My students need to hear sounds, touch materials, see images and engage with the content. Most importantly, these students need to practice learned skills daily, so they can maintain them. My goal is to help my students become independent individuals who can be self-sufficient in the future. To help my learners, I need sensory materials to both engage and excite my students! I need items to help my students remain calm and balanced; and manipulatives that will allow my students access to the curriculum in many different ways. I have high expectations for my students with autism that I know they can meet with the appropriate materials, instruction, collaboration and support!

My Project

These multi-sensory materials will allow my students to receive sensory input that will assist them in feeling calm throughout the day. The frog bean bag blanket will be extremely helpful in calming my students, if they are having a rough day. The flannel board will bring stories to life by allowing students to place items from books onto the board. The squeeze balls will increase attention to instruction by allowing students to "fidget" appropriately. The pencil grips will help my students, with poor fine motor skills, write more legibly. Hands-on equipment will let my students explore concepts they are learning about in all different ways. These items will increase participation and interaction among my class. My students will benefit from the support of these items in so many ways. The excitement, the balance, the hands-on experiences and the social interactions that will extend from these materials will help to transform my learners and increase their academic success!

This project is so important!

Students with autism have the potential to be independent and active members of the community. Children with autism have many deficits that require intensive support to overcome. My class, with the support of these materials, my three paraprofessionals and my many support therapists, will do nothing but improve from multi-sensory experiences and learning. Academic skills and success will pave the way for independence in my students' lives.
