Sensory Success

My Students

My students have a high interest for learning and desire for succeeding. Students at my school come from a high poverty level, which results in a high percentage of free and reduced lunch. Our school is also a personalized learning school; the idea of personalized learning is that ultimately each student moves forward at their own pace and at their own style so they can work on their strengths, but also work on their weaknesses. Personalized learning also involves using technology to teach students.

Learning is our passion, but for my students with Autism, this can be difficult without additional sensory supportive materials.

We have no budget to buy classroom materials and often as educators, we have to buy supplies ourselves. In order for my students to reach their full potential, I want to make sure I have sensory items available for them to help them succeed in learning.

My Project

We are asking our donors to help purchase new sensory items for our classroom, including fidgets and a small exercise trampoline. We had our previous DonorsChoose.org project fully funded at the beginning of the school year, which involved getting some fidgets. These have been wildly successful and well loved with all of my students. We are looking to get more variety with our fidgets and have styles that are more durable so they can continue to be used with future classes. When provided with a fidget, my students are more likely to sit at the table for longer work periods. The fidgets also double as reinforcement, and can be used as a brief sensory break between activities. My students know where our basket of fidgets are kept in the class and can independently seek them out when they need them.

My students with Autism are always seeking sensory input.

Fidgets are a safe and effective way to provide them with this input. My students are also very energetic and can sometimes be restless in class. Our Early Childhood teacher was kind enough to let us borrow their trampoline to trial its effectiveness, which was very popular to work for with all of my students and an excellent way to help reduce behaviors such as elopement (running out of the classroom). Unfortunately, the trampoline from the 3K-5K room is very small and has a low handle, so my students need to bend over in order to safely hold on and jump on it. We are asking for a slightly taller exercise trampoline to help accommodate my students who are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
