My Project
I have the honor of teaching an incredible group of students with moderate to severe autism. Each of my students brings their own unique strengths, challenges, and perspectives to the classroom. What makes them truly special is their determination and the different ways they engage with the world around them. While many of them communicate non-verbally, they have powerful voices through gestures, visuals, and their interactions with the environment.
These students thrive on routine, predictability, and sensory support, and they make progress when their individual needs are met.
Every day, they show resilience and creativity in learning, and I am constantly inspired by their growth. Our classroom is a space where they can feel safe, loved, and understood.
I am requesting a rocking chair to provide a calming and sensory-friendly space for my students. Many children with autism experience sensory processing challenges, and they often need moments of movement and self-regulation to focus on learning. A rocking chair offers rhythmic movement, which can help my students soothe themselves when feeling overwhelmed, reduce anxiety, and increase their ability to engage in classroom activities.
The rocking chair will serve as a safe haven when my students need a sensory break, helping them reset so they can return to learning with improved focus and calmness. For some students, a simple sensory tool like a rocking chair can make all the difference in their ability to participate in group activities, follow directions, and engage with peers. It will also reduce some of the classroom’s disruptive behaviors by giving them a proactive way to manage sensory overload.
