Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a specialized high school with students that participate in alternative assessment, and are on the autism spectrum or diagnosed with a developmental disability, requiring a smaller ratio class setting. Our site provides both academic and Career Devlopment and Occupational Studies (CDOS) aligned transition curriculum and services focused on the development of vocational skills, community based learning, self-care and independent living skills. As an occupational therapist, I work on improving the students functional skills through a large variety of sensory-motor, cognitive, visual/perceptual and self-help activities.

My Project

Please help me enhance the therapy room at my school!

As an occupational therapist, I frequently work with students helping to address their sensory-processing differences.

We use a variety of interventions, including sensory integration and sensory-based strategies, to help students organize environmental input and perform daily activities. Such strategies may include jumping, swinging and weight-bearing activities. Sensory processing refers to how the nervous system organizes and manages incoming environmental information via seven sensory systems: vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, visual, auditory, gustatory, and olfactory. As a result of sensory-processing differences, some students may demonstrate difficulty filtering out stimuli rather than the task at hand. These students often see difficulties with attention-shifting, selective attention, distractibility and joint attention, and the ability to understand oneself and relate to others in the environment. There are some ways occupational therapists work to affect arousal levels include using:

1. Movement/vestibular input: vertical movement—such as jumping, and slow linear movement—such as swinging or a rocking chair.

2. Proprioceptive input: weight-bearing activities and climbing activities.

3. Deep-pressure tactile input: touch techniques—such as massage, ball “squishes” or weighted lap pads.

I recently bought the therapy room an inflatable swimming pool to use as a ball pit, but I would love some help filling it up with balls! Additionally, I would love other key items to better provide the sensory integrative and sensory strategies necessary for their improved engagement and attention. Thank you!
