My Project

As occupational therapists, we work with many students who face challenges in the classroom due to unmet sensory needs. These sensory challenges, such as hypersensitivity to noise, difficulty focusing due to sensory overload, or the need for constant movement, can significantly impact a student’s ability to engage and succeed academically. By providing access to sensory tools and strategies, we can help these students manage their sensory needs in a way that supports their learning, focus, and emotional well-being. With the right sensory tools and support, we can provide the opportunity for every student to thrive in the classroom.

Specific tools like a wiggle cushion, therapy putty, sensory bins, slime, and magnet tiles, can help meet students' individual sensory needs to support engagement and focus in the classroom.

The wiggle cushion helps students who need to move in their seats without causing a distraction to others. This can provide gentle movement that helps improve focus and reduce restlessness. It's particularly beneficial for students who find it hard to stay still for long periods of time. Therapy putty provides tactile stimulation and can help students with fine motor skills, self-regulation, and focus. This tool is especially useful for students who need to occupy their hands to feel more focused. Sensory bins provide a tactile experience that can help students regulate sensory input through exploration and manipulation of materials. Slime is a great tool for students who benefit from tactile feedback and soothing sensory input. It provides a calming, tactile experience that can help students feel more regulated. Lastly, magnet tiles offer both a sensory and creative outlet. They help students focus through visual and tactile engagement while allowing for problem-solving and construction play.

By incorporating these sensory tools, students will be provided with valuable outlets for self-regulation, improving their focus, participation, and overall classroom performance.
