My Students

Every day we encounter new sensations through our senses in various environments. The ability to regulate those senses and react appropriately is difficult for some children. And sometimes the inability to do so prevents them from participating in academic lessons in school.

I work with students with special needs across all grade levels.

Every child is unique and has a unique set of needs. My school currently operates a mild/moderate special education program and we have students with diagnoses ranging from autism to cerebral palsy and beyond. As a therapist in the public school system, you have to be ready with anything and everything to make sure that these students are accessing as much of the curriculum as they are able too. I am so excited that the Chevron Fuel Your School Grant is allowing us the opportunity to receive much needed materials to support the population I work with.

My Project

With help from the Chevron Fuel Your School Grant, my plan is to provide a "sensory box" to as many classrooms as possible in order to provide easy access for all students to that extra sensory input. I want to include as many options as possible including tactile fidgets like Theraputty, Chewelry, resistive bands, vibrating pillows, and more! Sometimes you are just having a hard day and need that stress ball to squeeze right? By providing options in the classroom on a continuous basis, teachers and staff can support students to access those options as often as needed. Access to these materials may even help alleviate some behavior difficulties students may have when they do not have the ability to access that extra input they may need. When students are able to stay in the classroom longer, the more they will have the opportunity to be exposed to STEM concepts and learning which are vital for our future.

The ability to teach our students with special needs requires the ability to do so in a multi-sensory environment.

With the resources I am requesting from the Chevron Fuel Your School Grant, I hope to be able to support all my teachers in reaching that goal across all subjects, including STEM related lessons.
