My Students

Most of the students in my classroom are on the autism spectrum. They have difficulty processing everyday sensory information. Any of their senses may be overly or under sensitive, or both, at different times. These sensory differences can affect behavior, and can have a profound effect on a child's life.

My students range from ages three to five and have been diagnosed with a plethora of physical disabilities that impact their fine motor skills, mobility and sensory.

They are very enthusiastic about learning and find pleasure in exploring new ideas and concepts. My school is located in a neighborhood where ninety-nine percent of the resident's annual incomes are below poverty levels.

My Project

The vast majority of children on the autism spectrum have difficulty managing their sensory input. They may over or under react to visual, tactile and aural input, sometimes to the point where they are unable to participate in typical life activities.

The Feel and Find Sensory Tubs will allow students to explore their sense of touch as they search for letters, numbers and shapes in the sensory tubs!

The tubs come with three types of materials for a variety of tactile experiences. The Washable Sensory Play Materials include three different types of durable plastic materials such as hard and bumpy, soft and pliable, sandy and smooth, which will also be used for sensory regulation. The Lakeshore Clear-View Storage Boxes will help create personalized sensory experiences for all students based on individual sensory needs.I will Collaborate with the Occupational Therapist to create an area in the classroom where students are able to independently access sensory materials.
