My Students

A day in our classroom is full of energy and excitement as the students work together and take on new challenges. The students are a team as they solve problems, play games, and work on creative projects. Obstacles arise but the students are learning to work through them together.

My students love to learn and they love to move.

My 1st and 2nd graders are eager to learn from their teachers and each other and have been working hard to develop a supportive community with each other. Our school is one built on community and we believe strongly in honoring the whole child as we support their learning and celebrate the wonders of childhood.

My Project

We have a sand table but no sand! This kinetic sand will support children in developing their fine motor skills as they squish, squeeze, smash, roll, pinch and use tools with the sand. It will also support students' literacy skills as they practice letter and number formation with fingers and tools in the sand. Creatively, the beach sky will be the limit as children make structures with the sand. In the Spring when we study architecture, they will apply what they are learning to the sand structures they are building. In addition, this kinetic sand will help students find calm in a sometimes chaotic world. Playing with cool sand is soothing and relaxing. Even when met with the frustration of falling structures, children will be able to modify, rebuild and keep trying.

My students live in the concrete jungle of New York City.

We spend a lot of time outdoors but they crave the feelings of nature. They love to dig in the park, feeling the dirt between their fingers. Bringing sand into the classroom will not only support students' natural curiosity and creativity but it will also support their development and meet their sensory needs.
