My Project

Inclusion is about making the classroom ready for the child, not making the child ready for the classroom. My students have severe autism. They are diverse learners whose brains process sensory stimulation and educational information differently from their typical friends. Sensory processing is the ability to regulate the intensity of an emotional and behavioral response when presented with sensory input. My students, with both sensory processing and learning disabilities are better able to stay alert and focused when provided with the sensory equipment they need to stabilize their bodies and brains. So how do I ensure my classroom is supporting sensory processing differences in all of my students?

With a few adjustments, my classroom can provide a better opportunity for all my students to engage with learning.

The Sensory/water table can be filled with dried beans, rice or water for a calming effect. The purchase of a sensory table will help to calm students through tactile input or help stimulate hands in order to achieve better success in activities like writing. When a child feels overloaded with sensory input, a quiet space away from distractions can help them feel ‘just right’ again. The black out tent will give students a dark, confined space to decompress and be able to return to learning without causing disruptions. A platform swing helps improve proprioceptive and vestibular systems so students become aware of how they can control their movements. When an autistic student becomes dysregulated during class, a swing's movement helps him find calm and stillness within himself, which helps restore him to his education. The sensory bubble tube provides relaxing visuals and sounds. It helps quiet a student so they can return to learning. All of these materials will enable my differently abled students to participate in education alongside their typical peers.
