Inclusion is about making school ready for the child, not making the child ready for school. My students have severe Autism. They are diverse learners whose brains process sensory stimulation and educational information differently from their typical friends. Sensory processing is the ability to regulate the intensity of an emotional and behavioral response when presented with sensory input. My students, with both sensory processing and learning disabilities, are better able to stay calm and happy when provided with opportunities to be included with their typical peers. So how do I ensure my students are included?
Each morning, students from fourth and fifth grade volunteer to come to my classroom to interact with my students.
This interaction provides socialization, language development, and behavioral assistance. I like to challenge the "typical" students to become a voice for their peers with disabilities. These students go above and beyond to create activities, and events and spend time with my disabled students. They excel in assisting with my students' sensory needs. When they see an upset, overactive, or withdrawn student, they find fine motor toys to play and create with. These toys calm students by having them concentrate on intricate building and coordination skills. The typical students also take my students to the sensory room, where they relax under sensory lighting, swings, receive pressure, or climb and jump. The fourth and fifth-grade students suggest new activities and equipment. They brainstorm ways to build devices or how money can be raised to purchase items. They have created a completely inclusive environment at school through their selfless volunteer efforts. My materials list is items they suggested to assist my students.
