My Project

Inclusion is about making the classroom ready for the child, not making the child ready for the classroom. My students have severe autism. They are diverse learners whose brains process sensory stimulation and educational information differently from their typical friends. Sensory processing is the ability to regulate the intensity of an emotional and behavioral response when presented with sensory input. My students, with both sensory processing and learning disabilities are better able to stay alert and focused when provided with the sensory equipment they need to stabilize their bodies and brains. So how do I ensure my classroom is supporting sensory processing differences in all of my students?

With a few adjustments, my classroom can provide a better opportunity for all my students to engage with learning.

Teachers Pay Teachers offers an abundance of resources to provide interactive social stories. These stories are a very important part of the education of a child with special needs but can be utilized with all students. They offer scenarios and problems children may encounter, and positive solutions to the problems instead of lashing out or melting down. All of these materials will enable my differently-abled students to participate in education alongside their typical peers.
