My Project

Inclusion is about making the classroom ready for the child, not making the child ready for the classroom. My students have severe autism. They are diverse learners whose brains process sensory stimulation and educational information differently from their typical friends. Sensory processing is the ability to regulate the intensity of an emotional and behavioral response when presented with sensory input. My students, with both sensory processing and learning disabilities, are better able to stay alert and focused when provided with the sensory equipment they need to stabilize their bodies and brains. So how do I ensure my classroom is supporting sensory processing differences in all of my students?

With a few adjustments, my classroom can provide a better opportunity for all my students to engage with learning.

The Fiber Optic Sensory Lights are string lights that can be draped over a student or hung near them to provide soothing visuals and sounds. They can manipulate the lights with their fingers to provide fine motor stimulation which prepares them for fine motor activities back in the classroom. The beanbag chairs provide a comfortable spot to sit and enjoy the lights. When a child feels overloaded with sensory input, a small, tight space can help them feel secure and comfortable again. The purchase of the Inflatable Sensory Peapod for Children, a Therapeutic Compression Sensory Chair, will provide students with that space. The confined space decompresses anxiety and helps students return to learning without causing disruptions. All of these materials will enable my differently-abled students to participate in education alongside their typical.
