This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a Special Education Team Specialist at my elementary school, I work closely with our neurodivergent students, particularly those with autism and sensory processing needs. Many of my students struggle with self-regulation, focus, and managing the overwhelming sensory input of a busy school day. Unfortunately, public education does not always provide the spaces or tools needed to help these students thrive. That’s why I am working to create a dedicated sensory space equipped with tools to help students regulate and return to learning feeling calm and ready.

The specific items I’m requesting—sensory bins, kinetic sand, wobble stools, fine motor tools, and other sensory supports—will make a profound difference in their ability to learn.

Sensory bins and kinetic sand provide a calming, hands-on experience that helps students self-soothe when feeling overwhelmed. Wobble stools allow movement while seated, helping students who struggle to focus in a traditional chair. Fine motor tools strengthen hand muscles and coordination, supporting students with writing and daily tasks. These tools will give students safe ways to meet their sensory needs so they can engage more effectively in the classroom.

My goal is to create a welcoming, regulation-focused space where students can take short breaks when needed, practice self-regulation, and develop independence in managing their sensory needs. By providing these resources, we can help students build confidence, reduce anxiety, and increase their ability to participate in learning.

What makes my students special is their incredible resilience, creativity, and unique ways of engaging with the world. They deserve an environment that supports their strengths and helps them succeed. With your support, we can build a space where all students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.
