My Students

My students are amazing kids, who happen to have high-functioning autism and/or Asperger's. Their sensory needs are a part of each of them, and look different in each of them.

My students are brilliant!

They are in mainstream classes, and often can be found in honors and gifted classes. Our autism program has existed successfully, for 13 years, in a public middle school. Our school embraces and welcomes our students. My students' peers rally behind them and celebrate them. My profile picture is of a door our yearlong drama class decorated, in honor of Autism Awareness Month. The energy put towards autism awareness and acceptance for our my students here, is palpable

My Project

We've been given a space in our school for a sensory room, and are super excited to make it happen! Each year, we have students who need access to sensory breaks throughout their school day, in order to be successful. This can be a result of anxiety, anger, excitement, or even low-energy in need of a boost. Our sensory room will be a safe-haven for our students to visit during their school day, to decompress or to rev themselves up. The requested materials on our list are preferred items our students have used at one time or another (i.e. at home or in therapeutic settings), that have proven successful for them as they attempt to self-regulate. Having a variety of sensory items such as indoor swing, trampoline, therabands, therapy balls and medicine balls will allow our students to experience various methods for meeting their individual sensory needs, and develop a menu of personal strategies they can use to get themselves "just right." My goal is for my students to independently recognize their need for a sensory break and use them to regulate themselves.

Receiving these items will bring our sensory room dream, to fruition!

Our students will have a safe place, all their own, to access their sensory items, use them to self-regulate, and continue on with their school day. Creating the sensory room will send a clear message to our students that we want them to be at school and be successful. It will aide in their feeling accepted and welcome. It will encourage their confidence in themselves, and increase their willingness to participate.
