My Students

Being a middle schooler is tough as hormones kick in and school hierarchies form. It can be harder for students with special needs.

My students have special needs that are both visible and invisible, but all require a safe space that supports their emotional well being.

They come from different socio-economic backgrounds and different levels of familial support. Some need a break space on a daily basis, and some need it only occasionally.

My students range from kids with moderate to severe autism to students who live with PTSD. They navigate the world of middle school with tolerance and grace by showing up for each other and finding gratitude in the small places. Over half the children in the school come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and approximately 85% of my students come from that allocation. The special education department is expected to help all these children learn the tools they need to grow both cognitively and emotionally.

My Project

This room will provide a space for students that is calming, soothing, and re-energizing. My students have a variety of needs that all involve emotional regulation. Some do better with weighted objects such as medicine balls, or the pressure of a large pillow. Others need to rhythmically bounce themselves on an exercise ball, or do deep breathing exercises as they create an emotional space for themselves. Mats on the floor make the room softer for a variety of sitting areas.

Diffusing the lighting with florescent light covers helps calm their central nervous system when they become agitated.

While adding softer lights such as the rope lighting further calms the students. Objects with a variety of textures and colors such as the the textured balls and pillow covers as well as the liquid floor gels, gives them something to focus on for small periods of time. We have a visual timer (which needs batteries) that helps students manage their time. Within a few minutes of using this room and its tools, most students are ready to go back to the classroom focused and ready to learn.

I have included a few ways to organize and store these items such as the nets and shower caddies. These are essential tools to help keep items within reach, but also out of the way when not in use. Also included is a window film, so that light can come in, but students still feel their privacy is protected.
