Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

WES students, like students everywhere, are a super special group! We would like to set up a sensory room for these awesome students. A sensory room is like a therapeutic space with a variety of foam floor mats, weighted blankets, and other equipment that provides students with personalized sensory input— this helps children calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others. Students will be able to schedule time in this room to regulate their bodies throughout the day. A sensory room is important for all students with special needs or who struggle with sensory overload. This helps students calm and regulate themselves so they can be prepared for learning and interacting with others. Some students struggle to cope with the world around them. Loud noises, bright lights, rough patterns, or foods with unwelcome textures are just some of the things that can cause distress.

This sensory room can also provide a low-stress, fun environment to help students work through their emotions and reactions to certain stimuli.

We are so lucky to have a very diverse group in the farthest southeast corner of Portland, Oregon. As a school social worker, I have the pleasure of working with all students. Our diverse community has been quickly changing over the years as Portland continues to grow. With these growing pains, families who have called this area home for generations often end up doubling up/homeless or working several jobs to remain in their community. Our school is a designated Title I school which means the majority of families are living in Poverty.

By having this sensory room, our children have an option to take a sensory break, work on their gross motor skills, and support their social-emotional health.
