Middle School can be difficult for anyone but especially challenging for kids who have Autism. My 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are kind, funny, smart, sweet, creative, and quirky. Many of them also have other issues besides Autism such as anxiety, ADHD, or ODD. A 7.5 hour school day can be very long and at times frustrating for them. They may be dealing with academic, social, behavior, and language challenges while navigating the middle school environment. These challenges can cause stress, anxiety, and frustration.
My Project
Sensory items help my students to relax, calm themselves, regulate their emotions, and/or reset during the hectic school day. The variety of fidgets and other materials like the fiber optic light, sand art, Labyrinth Maze, pin art, and magnetic drawing board will allow students to receive a variety of sensory input during their sensory breaks. The air hammock and ottoman will allow seating choices during breaks.
After a sensory break, my students are more focused during instruction and willing to work on assignments or test.
They are more relaxed and can better manage challenges with socializing, language, academics, and making positive choices.
