Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn" -Ignacio Estrada. I apply this thought daily in my classroom. My students are faced with the challenge of being unique learners. As a special educator, I am tasked with using anything that will motivate them to learn.

My students are children with varying abilities and challenges, ranging from moderate speech & language needs, to health & mobility impairments, to autism.

My goal is to give my students as many opportunities to communicate with each other during activities and those with mobility impairments the opportunity to join their classmates for activities. They attend an early intervention preschool program on a public school campus, in Southern Ca.

Having a variety of manipulatives that they can hold, see and touch is a step closer to social emotional development and labeling their emotions and a step closer to forging friendships when knowing how they feel. Having students with multiple disabilities and various social skills is a challenge; this would greatly help foster their skills.

My Project

My students learn best when concepts are presented through a wide range of modalities, including: visual (seeing), auditory (hearing) and tactile (touching). When teaching very young learners of varying abilities, and challenges, the more senses or modalities we can activate, the more learning will take place. We are in need of materials that will help of students with their motor development and social skills. Our students need sensory materials that are suitable for 3-5 years old and a sensory play is a great way to build social skills. We are also asking for manipulative's that require our students to use their muscles in their little fingers which helps develop their fine motor skills as well as work on their pre academic skills.
