My Project

I work primarily with K-2 special needs students. Some of my students require help regulating their own emotions, this presents itself as a “crisis” often disrupting other students, losing instructional time, and causing paraprofessionals to step outside of the classroom and provide breaks for the student.

If given a calm-down corner within the classroom, such events and behaviors can be avoided.

If my students have a place where they can escape, breathe, and self-regulate, they will be able to return back to their seats and continue their learning.

I specifically chose items that were in neutral calming colors in order to avoid over-stimulation. A tent will allow the child a place to express their emotions, and the play mat creates a soft and safe spot that a student can escape to. The tent I chose closes so that the child can feel a sense of privacy, however does include a small window for the teacher to check on the child and make sure they are safe. I have also chosen a weighted pillow and another pillow containing inspirational quotes to further create a calm and positive environment. Lastly, I have chosen an expandable ball to act as a visual for breathing exercises and sensory squishy bean bags to meet the sensory needs of my students. I believe these items will help my students tremendously.
